S13.1 Introduction

Authority: Registration of Leases (Scotland) Act 1857

The granter (or landlord) of a lease lets property to the grantee (or tenant) for a specific period (or term). The tenant will normally pay the landlord an annual sum of money (rent) in return for the use of the property, and will agree to abide by certain conditions imposed by the landlord. At the end of the term, the tenant’s interest in the lease reverts to the landlord. All Leases and Assignations of Leases now induce first registration.

However, short leases may be recorded in the Books of Council and Session.
