S17.2 General Vesting Declaration (GVD)

An alternative and increasingly common method of compulsory acquisition is by recording a General Vesting Declaration. A Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) is first prepared by the acquiring authority, but there is no statutory requirement that it be recorded. A GVD is then drawn up and recorded. Unlike the description in a CPO, which lists the individual properties being purchased and the owners of these properties, the description in a GVD is usually a composite one, which describes only the whole area comprising the separate properties.
