In minutes designations of all parties are kept as short as the circumstances in each case permit. The following are examples of parties as designed in the writ together with the method of minuting:

Writ: Disp. by A and B, each owner of separate properties
Minute: Disp. by A, proprietor of subjects I aftermentioned and B, proprietor of subjects II aftermentioned - To C
Writ: Disp. by A and B, each owner of 1/2 pro indiviso of property

Occupations are not minuted except in the case where it is the only means of identifying the party, e.g. John Smith, Solicitor, Edinburgh.

A granter who is designed only as “heritable proprietor of the subjects aftermentioned” is uniquely designed. If the subjects have a postal address, this is used as the designation.

John Docherty, 7 Sheep Wynd, Montrose, trading as Docherty Surveyors, 12 Milne Street, Kilmarnock, should be minuted in full. The words “trading as” should not be abbreviated to “t/a”. “Docherty Surveyors” is not indexed.

Where a party is designed as, e.g. “c/o Black, 3 High Street, Ayr”, only “3 High Street, Ayr” is minuted. If however, the designation is e.g. “c/o a Firm, a Company, or a Bank”, this is minuted as, e.g. “c/o Bank of Scotland, 1 High Street, Crieff”.

Where an unlimited company is stated to be “incorporated under the Companies Act”, the word “incorporated” is shown in the minute e.g. ?p?nGILLON BROTHERS (LIMESPREADERS)?z incorporated. The word “incorporated” is not indexed, except where the name of the unlimited company is that of a person, e.g.?pJAMES ?nPETTIGREW INCORPORATED?z
